Materials Selection

Exceptional knife craftsmanship requires careful material selection. Each component from blade steel to handle materials determines the knife's performance, durability, and quality. Below are material options we offer:

Blade

Depend on the purpose of the knife, here are the blade options:

  • Carbon Steels - Sharpest edge and easy to sharpen, but require maintenance due to rust susceptibility.
  • Tool Steels - Tougher than carbon steel with better wear resistance.

Handle Materials

  • Stabilized wood - Natural appearance with enhanced durability and moisture resistance.
  • G10/Micarta - Superior grip and weather resistance for heavy-use applications.
  • Natural materials (horn, bone, antler) - Unique textures and traditional authenticity with special handling needs.

Hardware & Fittings

  • Pins and bolsters - Match blade steel's corrosion resistance using stainless steel, or brass.
  • Guards and spacers - Choose materials that complement both blade steel and handle aesthetics.

We always source materials from reputable suppliers.

Our Story

Kune Knives (Koo-Knee Knives) began not with a business plan, but with a promise to build tools that last, where the weight in your hand, the balance of the blade, the grain of the handle aren't just details, but what makes the blade truly dependable.

Each knife starts with respect: for the steel, carefully selected and tested; for the antler and brass, sourced ethically and prepared with patience; for the process that can't be rushed; and most importantly, for you, the person who will depend on this blade in moments that matter.

In a world of disposable everything, we make blades that get better with time, that carry stories, that become part of your own tradition, because some things are worth doing right the first time.

Our Mission

We forge more than knivesβ€”we craft trusted companions for outdoor enthusiasts and passionate cooks. Using traditional techniques and the finest materials, every Kune knife is handmade and custom-fitted to feel like it was born in your hand. Built to outlast generations, our blades transform work into pleasure, making every adventure and every meal a testament to quality craftsmanship.

Knife Care

Proper care ensures your Kune knife will last for generations

Daily Care

  • Clean immediately after use - Wash with warm soapy water and dry completely to prevent staining and corrosion
  • Hand wash only - Never put custom knives in the dishwasher as harsh detergents and heat can damage the blade and handle
  • Dry thoroughly - Water left on the blade can cause rust spots, especially on carbon steel knives

Storage

  • Use knife blocks or magnetic strips - Protect the edge and prevent blade damage from drawer contact
  • Avoid loose drawer storage - Blades can get nicked and damaged when bumping against other utensils
  • Keep blades covered - Use blade guards or sheaths for long-term storage or transport

Sharpening & Maintenance

  • Sharpen regularly - A sharp knife is safer and performs better than a dull one
  • Use proper sharpening tools - Whetstones, honing steels, or professional sharpening services work best
  • Maintain proper angle - Most knives perform best at 15-20 degrees per side

What to Avoid

  • No cutting on hard surfaces - Glass, stone, or metal cutting boards will dull your blade quickly
  • Avoid acidic foods for extended periods - Don't leave citrus or tomatoes on carbon steel blades
  • Never use as tools - Don't pry, twist, or use knives for non-cutting tasks

Special Care for Different Materials

  • Carbon steel - Oil lightly after cleaning and drying to prevent rust formation
  • Stainless steel - Less maintenance required but still benefits from proper cleaning and storage
  • Natural handle materials - Occasionally treat wood handles with food-safe oil to prevent cracking
